Alice Springs is 1500 kilometer away from Darwin and Adelaide, and even much farther from the other major cities. If you are getting to Central Australia by car, no matter from with direction, you would find yourself driving a full day or two though the flat, monotone desert. It is very impressive after covering all that distance to than finally reach the outstanding MacDonnell Ranges or Uluru and Kata Tjuta monoliths.
This is a very ancient land. When MacDonnell Ranges were formed they have been as high as Himalayas, millions of years took the mountans to eroded to the present state. Uluru and Kata Tjuta formations is what have remained from ones a big mountain range.
