We have been trying to reach the Ukrainian Antarctic Station of Vernadsky and made it as close as 10 miles away. The packed ice was to much to get through.
Next year, in 2020, it is going to be 200 years since the discovery of Antartica. Exploration of the South Continent was one of the biggest challenges at the time. It is full of tragedy stories which took many lives. With combined efforts of verity of nations it was possible to explore the region slowly putting shore lines of Antartica Continent on the map.
Sailing trip to the Antarctic Peninsula on the modern sail boat with no doubt could not be compared to the challenges people have been dealing with back in the days. Never the last, going through the stormy Drake Passage and dealing with ice is still one of the most challenging trips nowadays.
We have ruff seas all the way trough Drake Passage on the way to Antartica and back.
Sustained winds of 60+ knots and the strongest gust of 92 knots (47 meters per second). 10 Meter high waves are hard to capture, but at least some Antarctic coastline should show the scale of this drama.
